Addressing Local Traffic Issues

For decades residents and tourists have complained about two main intersections. The first intersection (Highway US 10 E. & Highway 37 S) is a source of frustration to local residents and visitors alike. I felt that having a flashing red and yellow traffic arbitrator (signal) was insufficient to meet the needs of the increasing volume of traffic. Motorists were occasionally frustrated by the ambiguity of whose turn was next, a decision that the flashing lights are entrusted with regulating. The situation could be potentially dangerous. A case in point is a story that I am not joyful to say that, “I told you so.” The incident occurred about a mile up the road on Highway US 10 W and Highway M-37 N.

On July 29, 2023 a mother and daughter were tragically killed in a car accident at the intersection. For months I had proposed and worked with (MDOT) Michigan Department of Transportation personnel to consider a “Roundabout” or a full-stop traffic light at either, or both intersections. The death of two beautiful souls and the fact according to an official “The traffic pattern has changed post Covid, were possible instrumental in MDOT’s decision to add a full stop traffic signal.

Finally, accentuations of more visible crosswalks and a pedestrian “push button” to slow down traffic warning for pedestrians crossing at Michigan Ave.( Highway M-37 ) and 7th Street are more changes scheduled for 2027. I’ve been assured we’re in the cue.
